THE WHAT, WHY AND HOW OF PSYCHOSOCIAL RISK
ASSESSMENT AND CONTROL
Changes to work, health and safety regulations to include codes of practice on the management of psychosocial hazards at work are happening
now. Although PCBUs have been required to assess and control risks to psychological health for many years, it has been recognised that a stronger and more prescriptive approach is needed. Drawing on the integrated approach to workplace mental health model, this presentation will cover some of the background to why these changes are needed, outline what the new expectations are looking like, and explore some of the options available to assist organisations in this area.
Dr Sarah Dawkins
Dr Sarah Dawkins is co-director of Pracademia, a knowledge-translation company working with business and industry to create evidence-informed approaches to workplace mental health and wellbeing. She is also a registered clinical psychologist and holds an Adjunct Senior Researcher position at the University of Tasmania. Sarah has extensive experience in designing, delivering and evaluating strategies and interventions in workplace mental health – from prevention through to early intervention and return to work.

Dominique was the recipient of the 2022 Australian Allied Health Awards Rehabilitation Counsellor of the Year. Dominique will talk about her professional background and what led to her receiving the award as well as promote awareness of the awards. Dominique will also discuss her involvement in the Tasmanian Emergency Services MyPulse health and wellbeing programs and will provide an overview of the programs which have a holistic focus geared at early help seeking and utilising health coaching techniques.
Ms Dominique Higgins
Team Leader / Health and Wellbeing Specialist (Rehab Management
Dominique Higgins has worked as a Rehabilitation Counsellor for 15 years, having worked for 7 years in her current role as a Team Leader and Health and Wellbeing Specialist with Rehab Management Hobart. Dominique has a professional background in Psychology, Rehabilitation Counselling and Health Coaching has worked in a range of settings including the non-for-profit, Government and the Private sectors in Disability, Teaching
and Vocational Rehabilitation. Dominique has a keen interest in early intervention and managing psychosocial risk and injury.

PSYCHOSOCIAL RISKS AT WORK
As Rehabilitation Providers in workplaces, we are very much aware of the contribution of psychosocial hazards to physical and psychological injury. New Regulations and a Code of Practice recently introduced in Tasmania require that every workplace manages Psychosocial hazards at work.
Anne-Marie and Fiona will co-present this skills-based workshop on how an Integrated Approach to psychological wellbeing and psychosocial risk management work in practice.

Ms Fiona McCarthy
Fiona McCarthy holds a degree in Occupational Therapy and post graduate qualifications in Ergonomics, Safety and Health. After a career in Occupational Rehabilitation in diverse industries, Fiona moved into work health and safety roles in corporate settings. Fiona now specialises in Human Factors consulting and injury prevention. Her special interest is Psychosocial Hazard Management and implementation of new Code of Practice and Integrated Approaches to Workplace Wellbeing. She has full membership of HFESA and COHSP with AIHS.
Ms Anne-Marie Dean
Anne-Marie Dean has over twenty-five years’ experience in workplace rehabilitation and injury management, training & assessment, counselling, case management, disability, and aged care. With qualifications in Psychology and Rehabilitation Counselling, Anne-Marie lectured at the University of Tasmania for 10 years and conducted research into the experience of long-term injured workers within compensation schemes – with a focus on psychological injury.
She is the current TAVRP President, an Advisor to the Rehabilitation
Advisory Panel with WorkSafe Tasmania; and currently works within the Wellbeing space for the Tasmanian Government.

Dr Rebecca Chabot
Rebecca Chabot, PhD, has studied and practiced wellness in the form of mindfulness, yoga, meditation and breathing for over 27 years. She has a wealth of knowledge and experience in wellness teaching, coaching, and training around the world from Australia to North America, to India and Indonesia.
Leading workshops, retreats, classes, conferences, corporate wellness sessions as well as private wellness consultations, Rebecca offers a holistic and evidence-based approach to wellness.
As a scientist, she brings an academic inquiry to the practice of wellness and is always growing with the latest research. Rebecca is passionate about helping people improve their mental fitness as well as their physical fitness, through practical science-based tools that empower people to live their happiest, healthiest, and most successful lives.
EVIDENCED BASED APPROACHES FOR EMPLOYEES EXPERIENCING WORKPLACE BULLYING
Psychosocial hazards represent an increasing risk to employees’ health and wellbeing. Developing an awareness of common psychosocial workplace hazards allows organisations and rehabilitation providers to take an integrated approach in preventing harm, intervening early, and supporting employee recovery. Workplace bullying has been identified as a significant cause of harm to individuals and cost to organisations. Research suggests 9.4% of Australian employees are affected by workplace bullying each year, costing Australian organisations’ between 6 and 36 billion dollars annually.
In this presentation you will learn how to identify behaviours which
constitute workplace bullying, develop an understanding of evidence-based approaches to workplace bullying, and learn specific skills for implementing these approaches in real-world contexts.
Dr Emma Richardson and Jessica Forward, Psychologists,
Well Minds Work
Dr Emma Richardson is a Registered Clinical Psychologist with experience working across a variety of settings. Emma is currently working in Hobart as the co-founder of Well Minds Work, a business that designs and delivers evidence-based and interactive workshops that teach psychological knowledge and skills, as a clinical psychologist at Eternal Women’s Health, and as a lecturer and supervisor at the University of Tasmania. Emma’s research, academic, and clinical psychology practice interests are focused
on the intersection between physical and mental health, as well as psycho-oncology, perinatal mental health, women’s health, complex trauma, and workplace mental health.
Jessica Forward is a Clinical Psychologist, who completed her Masters at the University of Tasmania (UTAS). Jessica has had experience in working across a variety of settings including teaching and research, private practice, community mental health and inpatient drug and alcohol rehabilitation as well as developing group based mental health programs for organisations. She tends to work with adult populations and has special interest in areas such as substance dependence, complex trauma, anxiety, anger management, depression, and interpersonal/attachment issues.
Jessica currently works in private practice, teaches at UTAS and delivers and develops mental health-based workshops and community events as part of Well Minds Work.
